Celebrating over 28 years in Central Pennsylvania, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region has embarked on a $235,000 annual appeal.  We have been the area's leader in establishing and supporting on-to-one mentoring relationships or friendships and currently serve more than
900 children throughout Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon and Perry counties.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth.  The Big Brothers Big Sisters vision is to provide successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools and stronger communities for all.

The statistics speak for themselves:

Last year our agency served 905 at-risk children. None of those children entered the juvenile justice system, none was involved in violence at school or home, and all who were eligible to graduate from high school graduated with a plan for their future.

An adjudicated youth sent to Shaffner Detention Center in Dauphin County, PA, costs $20.000 for an average 20-day stay.  Ninety percent of children in Shaffner come from single-parent families.  It also costs taxpayers $30,780 for an average six-month program for drug and alcohol treatment.

Locally, we have worked hard to maintain our cost per match of approximately $900, which is well below the federal benchmark of $1,500.

The national average for match length is 21 months; locally, our average match length is 35 months, equaling long-term, life- changing relationships for local at-risk youths.

Think about a child who has wished for a Big Brother of Big Sisters.  Someone to have fun with and confide in.  Someone to be a mentor.  A guide.  A friend.  Now, think of how your gift can make a difference in that child’s life!
