Quick Facts

Needs:

• 33,000 children living in one parent households

• Another 4,423 children are living with grandparents

• Of the 1,544 children involved in juvenile probation in Dauphin Co. in 2006, only 273 lived with both parents

• The estimate for our area is that there are more than 3,000 children who have at least one parent incarcerated leading to isolation, absence of emotional support, difficulty accessing services, and inconsistency

Solutions:

• Sustainable one-to-one mentoring relationships in schools and in the community with measurable positive results

• Average Match length:
• Community= 27 months  (national average=22 months)

• Bigs in School = 13 months (national average =9 months)

• Six month retention rate:
• Community =84%  (national average 78%)
• Bigs in School = 86% (national average 71%)


Results:


• 13 of 14 youth eligible for graduation from  High School did graduate

• 0 Children placed on juvenile probation
